No parent likes to see their child in trouble; in fact, as a parent, my greatest desire is to rescue them out of all their problems. In her book, Someone’s Son, Brenda Rhodes shares from a mother’s heart the struggles and heartaches she walked through with her son Ronal Paul.
I found my heart aching, crying, and in the end rejoicing with her as she unfolded the story of an eight year battle with drug addiction, personality changes, loss, and love, wrapped in the faithfulness and protection of her Father, God. As I read, I could recount the many times the Lord has spoken to me in such a way that I couldn’t mistake it for His voice. I saw myself in areas of my own life where I know God prepared me for situations coming and said, “I’ll be with you,” and I knew it to be true and could cling to that promise throughout the circumstance.
If I were to name one quote that spoke to me louder than any other, it would be this: “Let Me be God. You be Brenda. Let Me be God.” I could easily insert my own name where hers is because I often try to control situations in order to “help God out.” But that isn’t what He’s asked.
In the end, great healing balm poured over the entire family and many friends. God was glorified, and Ronal Paul was forever set free of the pain and torment he endured since his own childhood.
I would recommend that everyone read this book. It isn’t only for those in the throes of emotional pain, but for those on the sidelines, perhaps struggling with forgiveness, or unconditional love.
