The Mighty Macs coming SOON

I love to be invited out with friends to see the newest movie that has been released and maybe spend some time talking over dinner. With finances tightening our belts, dinner and a movie with friends is an extravagant outing. Thankfully, there are invitations that come through my email that offer tickets for two to preview the upcoming release of a film. “Would you like to go?”

Two months ago, I was blessed to visit our local theater for one such event. The movie? The Mighty Macs, a film based on a true story, set in 1971 when women were beginning to assert their need for careers and lives other than managing a household.

It was difficult to believe that this production cost roughly $7 million and was written, produced, and released by an independent company. There isn’t that homemade feel we’ve come to know in projects completed without the “big houses”.

After you've watched this engaging trailer, be sure to check your local listings and see if The Mighty Macs will be visiting your neighborhood October 21, (two Fridays from now). It'll be great for the whole family. Encouraging, motivating, and a great message are tied into this film.

The Shunning

Recently I have been given the opportunity to review the newest release of award winning author, Beverly Lewis's made for TV movie, The Shunning, based on her novel (same title); directed by Michael Landon Jr. I had not read the book, so didn't know what to expect, although my daughter owns the book and loves it.

Each of the characters formed a beautiful tapestry, filled with color and depth. From the Amish family and the English, there was compassion, a need to understand, and the expression of the fear in telling the whole truth.

This is the story of love, loss, truth, and secrets, but it is also a window into the Amish life. Katie Lapp, 20 year old woman, pledged to marry the bishop battles memories of her lost love as well as a promise she made to him, "Never quit singing." Her struggle intensifies when she finds her parents are keeping secrets from her that could, and probably will, change the fabric of their relationships forever.

For those unfamiliar with the Amish ways, some of the content is troubling and difficult to take in. For me, it was helpful to have hovered in a discussion regarding the Amish and Mennonite faiths. This discussion gave me understanding into the "no music" rule among other things. As an English Literature student, I am coming to enjoy reading, viewing these varied stories that offer insight into other lifestyles. Beverly Lewis has done a great job of telling the story and Michael Landon Jr. followed through with the making of this film, bringing to the screen a story that will touch the heart.
